6/3/2020 Podcast Review
MAKE: At the end of the week, you will create a Podcast Review. This can be in the form of a Google Doc -or- a podcast of your creation. It should include:
"SAFE CHOICES" LIST + As with most books, podcasts and documentaries about art, there may be some mature content. Use your best judgement on what's appropriate for you and your household.
I also want to take a moment to address the lack of diversity among these artists. The Fine Art world has long been part of the problem when we talk about exclusivity and representation of diverse and marginalized groups. As with most history, it was recorded and written by whoever was in power at the time, which was usually white males. This means that POC, Women, and LGBTQ individuals were often excluded from partaking in exhibitions or even educational opportunities, and the artwork they did create was often disregarded by those whose job it was to decide what art should be saved and valued. This does not mean that female, LGBTQ, and POC artists did not exists, it just means that only now are they starting to have the voice in the Fine Art world that they long deserved. 2/10/2020 Mandalas & Radial Design
Radial balance is any type of balance based on a circle with its design extending from center. History of Mandalas and Radial Design
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools. A labyrinth is not a maze, it is not meant to confuse or frustrate you. The labyrinth is one of the oldest contemplative tools known to humankind. This ancient design has been found as far back as 3000 years in a variety of forms and cultures. Some of the cultures where labyrinths have been found are ancient Crete, France, Hopi Native Americans, Norway, India, and the British Isles. | 1/21/2020 Critique: Responding to Artwork
Knowing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design can be helpful when discussing artwork. Use these images to help become more familiar with the basics. 1/6/2020 Gouache & WatercolorSkin Tone
How to Mix Colors With Gouache On your paint palette, gather small amounts of the colors you need. Usually, you will need less of the darker or cooler colors. (see the chart above) If I'm using violet and yellow as my base, I'll start by adding a very small amount of violet to my yellow. I'll continue doing this until the right base color appears. I may add a little green if it looks too red, or blue if it looks too orange. . . Because I have pale skin, I would load my paintbrush with the hue I made, and add it to my white. If it is still too light, I would add a bit more until it matches. It may dry a little darker. Once your brown looks like the right hue, decide how much white or black you will need to add.
12/19/2019 Frida Self Portrait: UnderdrawingRemember, outlines only! You are essentially creating a coloring book page for yourself. No value, just lines. No need to add detail, your paint will cover up all of your pencil lines. Save that time, and add detail with your paintbrush later. Grid Method Place a grid over your reference photo. In most cases, this should be a grid with 1/2 inch boxes. On a separate piece of paper, draw a grid with the same amount of boxes across and down. For example, in the photo below we have 7 boxes across and 10 boxes down, so we made a grid on our blank paper that had 7 boxes across and 10 boxes down. If you want to scale your image up, the grid on your blank paper should be bigger, maybe 3/4 of an inch or 1 inch. If you want to scale it down, you may want to make the grid on your reference image 3/4 or 1 inch and the grid on your paper 1/2 inch.

4/12/2019 Radial Paper CollageUsing radial balance, you will create a collage depicting a public figure that you look up to. We will create an image palette, basically a piece of paper with images you've gathered from online resources. You can use any images your gather, along with colored construction paper, magazines, old books, or other paper materials. The goal is to get the viewer to see the public figure you chose, with the same amount of respect and appreciation as you do. By using the principle of radial balance, we help create a focal point, and a visual path for the viewer's eye. They immediately look at the person you placed in the center of the page, and work their way out towards the additional elements you chose to surround your subject with. Radial Balance |
