12/19/2019 Frida Self Portrait: UnderdrawingRemember, outlines only! You are essentially creating a coloring book page for yourself. No value, just lines. No need to add detail, your paint will cover up all of your pencil lines. Save that time, and add detail with your paintbrush later. Grid Method Place a grid over your reference photo. In most cases, this should be a grid with 1/2 inch boxes. On a separate piece of paper, draw a grid with the same amount of boxes across and down. For example, in the photo below we have 7 boxes across and 10 boxes down, so we made a grid on our blank paper that had 7 boxes across and 10 boxes down. If you want to scale your image up, the grid on your blank paper should be bigger, maybe 3/4 of an inch or 1 inch. If you want to scale it down, you may want to make the grid on your reference image 3/4 or 1 inch and the grid on your paper 1/2 inch.
