9/9/2019 EQUITY & INCLUSIONAlright, let's talk about something serious for a moment. We are about to create a book that most students will keep for their lifetime. They will show their families, and when they are older they may have children and grandchildren of their own that they will share this with. We can't afford to make big mistakes. Please take a moment to carefully read the article below, and discuss with your neighbors.
EQUITY is the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. Improving equity involves increasing justice and fairness within the procedures and processes of institutions or systems, as well as in their distribution of resources. INCLUSION Inclusion is the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. An inclusive and welcoming climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions for all people. It’s important to note that while an inclusive group is by definition diverse, a diverse group isn’t always inclusive. Increasingly, recognition of unconscious or ‘implicit bias’ helps organizations to be deliberate about addressing issues of inclusivity. Editors and Editors in ChiefsToday you will come up with a written equity plan on procedures to make sure this doesn't happen in your pages, AND to make sure our yearbook is equitable. This will become our formal policy that we will share with our principals.
